Plaquemine, LA. March 1, 1862. Corporation of Plaquemine Municipal Scrip Note, Ten Cents. Unlisted municipal issue. Issued municipal fractional currency note payable to bearer at the Treasurer’s Office, denominated Ten Cents, with text stating redemption in Confederate Treasury Notes in sums of ten dollars. Printed in green ink on thin paper with ornamental typographic borders, repeated “TEN” denomination panels, and a central eagle vignette; the note bears a handwritten serial number "4917" and manuscript signatures of the Treasurer and Mayor at the lower margin, with place and date printed below. The reverse is blank, as issued. Fine to VF condition, with folds, edge wear, and age toning consistent with circulation. Printer not indicated. The Union took control of Plaquemine in May 1862, shortly after the capture and occupation of Baton Rouge (May 9, 1862). Union naval forces moved upriver following the fall of New Orleans (April 25, 1862), and Plaquemine came under effective Union control soon thereafter as part of securing the Mississippi River corridor. Civil authority and commerce in the town continued under occupation, which explains the issuance and circulation of municipal scrip dated both before and after Union control.
