Penn Yan, New York, 1882. 1 Share Capital Stock I/C Certificate, Black on black border with company title at top, S/N 19, POC's and hand written across front, VF-XF condition, signed by James Drake (I assume a relative of Charles) on the back. Dennison & Brown. The Keuka Lake Steamboat "Wars" began in 1873 due to competition between competing business men associated with different cities and railroads. It lasted between 1873 and 1892, when it ended after Charles W. Drake, a New York City business men with a consortium of financiers started by buying the Bath & Hammondsport Railroad and the “old line” (the Keuka Lake Navigation Company). He then set his sights on Mrs. Halsey, T.O. Hamlin, and the “new line” (Crooked Lake Navigation Company). Rumors that Drake was going to have a steel-hulled boat built which would be the largest and finest on the lake. plus a purchase offer she couldn’t refuse, caused Mrs. Halsey to sell her company and its boats to Drake in 1892, thus ending the last of the “Steamboat Wars”.
