Lot of over 20 political cartoons that have been cut out of newspapers, with original newspaper print (mostly advertisements) on back, all in black and white. Includes political cartoons on a myriad of mid- to late- 1800s subjects, such as Giuseppe Garibaldi, Taxation of liquor and cigars, but mostly centered on the Civil War. Many of the cartoons depict "John Bull" a caricature that represents England, and the role of the English in the ongoing conflict between the Union and the Confederate States of America. Includes: The Happy Family; The Rebel Chivalry; How the Rebels Win Victories!; John Bull Among His Foreign Relations; and John Bull Between Two Stools. All are in VF condition with few signs of aging. Interesting group of political cartoons from a tumultuous time in American history, with interesting advertisements from the period on the backs of each piece. (20+)
