Richmond, Virginia, November 11, 1845, Manuscript 2 page letter from J.C. Rey to the governor of Virginia, Governor Mc Dowall. Vf condition with light foxing, 7.5 by 9.8 inches, A black ship steward, Henry Boyer, who was not a slave, was accused of helping a slave escape from the schooner Cornelia and was imprisoned for this in Virginia. The letter pleads with the governor to release him due to his innocence and that he was a married man with 4 young children, and he would never have broken the law or had any interest in anti-slavery or abolitionist movements and was a man of "below ordinary intellect among the negroes". Rare and interesting slavery related letter.
