The auction will take place at the 3 WEST CLUB at 3 W. 51st Street (at Fifth Avenue), New York, NY 10019
New Orleans, Louisiana, 18xx (ca.1858-1914). Lot of 20 items. Includes 1857 Bill of Exchange printed by RWH&E with allegorical angel on left and Neptune on top. Also includes 10 N.O National bank checks from 1911-1914 and 9 State Treasurer Interest Fund Checks of 1879 signed by E.A.Burke, Treasurer of the State of Louisiana. Burke was Democratic State Treasurer of Louisiana from 1878 to 1888 and the first Democrat to hold the office of Louisiana Treasurer following Reconstruction. Burke later fled to Honduras after it was discovered that there were misappropriations of state treasury funds. While in Honduras Burke became a major land owner and held government positions within Honduras’ nationalized railway systems. Burke remained an exile till his death nearly four decades later. All are in VG to XF condition.
