The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O), founded in 1827, was one of the first major railroads in the United States and a pioneering force in American transportation. Initially designed to connect the port of Baltimore with the Ohio River, the B&O Railroad played a critical role in opening up the American Midwest to trade and development.
