Lith. XF to AU condition, Issued in 1859 by the Terre Haute, Alton & St. Louis Rail Road Co., these payment certificates were used to compensate contractors and suppliers with a promised 6% interest, reflecting the company’s reliance on credit during a major expansion phase of Midwestern rail construction.
