John Adams Dix (1798 to 1879) was a prominent American statesman, Union general, and influential railroad executive whose career spanned both public service and private industry during the nationÍs expansion. He served as U.S. Senator and later as Secretary of the Treasury under James Buchanan, and gained national recognition at the outbreak of the American Civil War for his firm pro-Union stance. In the years before the war, Dix was also active in railroad development, serving as president of the Mississippi and Missouri Railroad, where he helped oversee expansion across Iowa, contributing to the creation of vital transportation links that supported westward settlement and economic growth.
