Aberdeen, Mississippi, ca.1853–1858. Mississippi Mutual Insurance Company, a spectacular three-note uncut proof sheet ($1, $2, $3) printed on india paper mounted on thin white card. Vignettes include a commerce-and-navigation allegory with steam locomotive ($1), a pastoral harvest scene with classical female figure ($2), and a central oval portrait of George Washington flanked by Liberty and Abundance ($3). Archival cancellation punch-holes present along lower margins. Notes appear Choice to Gem Uncirculated condition, Issued examples of this series are rated R5–R6; intact uncut sheets are substantially rarer, R7. Aberdeen was one of antebellum Mississippi’s most prosperous commercial centers, and the Mississippi Mutual Insurance Company—chartered by act of the state legislature—was among the alternative institutions empowered to issue circulating currency after Mississippi’s sweeping post-Panic banking restrictions. A genuinely exceptional survivor of the Southern Free Banking era. DW&C.
