Jackson, Mississippi, 1856 to 1860. Lot of 4 Manuscript City and County Tax Receipts from Samuel Claiborn and his estate for State, County, School, Poor, Special, City, and Street Taxes on Lot 8, Square 7 South. The receipts are significant slave-related documents, with printed tax forms explicitly enumerating slaves among taxable property categories, and one receipt containing a manuscript entry recording 2 Slaves as taxable property. Additional taxable categories include pianos, pleasure carriages, Bowie knives, dueling pistols, stallions, watches, and other personal property, providing an excellent record of antebellum Mississippi taxation.
