New York City, 1855. 34 inches by 21 inches, Printed in black on thin off-white paper, Extraordinary map of New York City issued by Charles Magnus in commemoration of the Declaration of Independence. Depicts the entirety of Manhattan as well as most of Brooklyn, Bedford, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Queens, Ravenswood, Astoria, Jersey City and Hoboken. An inset map at the bottom center shows Long Island. The whole map is rendered in extraordinary detail with special attention given to individual streets, blocks, parks and even important buildings. The map shows the beginnings of Hunters Point of Long Island City in Queens. Important ferry crossings, canals, and railroads are also indicated. Manhattan maps notates various districts including Manhatanville, Yorkville, and Harlem. Central Park has yet to manifest and though the grid structure above 155th is ghosted in, it had yet to be officially planned. Where Columbia University stands todays shows the location of the New York Lunatic Asylum. In the lower right quadrant is an elaborate medallion features the full text of the Declaration of Independence as well as sigils representing each of the original 13 colonies. Map was printed by Charles Magnus. Magnus (16 March 1826 – 3 May 1900) was a printing entrepreneur, whose business was based in New York, NY. Magnus is known for his color lithographs of city views, song sheets, maps and patriotic illustrations for stationery and covers during the American Civil War. Appears in Fine to VF condition with archivally reinforced folds due to light splitting, Rare in any condition.
