Photograph of Civil War Major General Quincy Adams Gillmore measuring 2.5 inches by 4 inches. Quincy Adams Gillmore (1825–1888) was a notable American military officer and engineer. Graduating from West Point in 1849, he initially served as an engineer and became prominent for his contributions during the American Civil War. Gillmore is best remembered for his successful sieges of Fort Pulaski and Fort Sumter, where his expertise in military engineering proved crucial. His post-war career involved significant work on coastal defenses and various infrastructure projects. Gillmore's advancements in military engineering and his role in key Civil War campaigns left a lasting impact on U.S. military history. He retired as a brigadier general in 1877 and lived the remainder of his life in relative privacy. Gillmore passed away in 1888, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and service in military engineering.
