Belleville, NJ. Lot of 5 issued notes, $1, $2, $3, $5, 1837-1839, Wait 11, 12, 13, & 14, R-5. The Manufacturers Bank at Belleville was incorporated in 1834 and closed in 1839. The two $1 (both Wait 11) have a woman with scales, seated on a bale, with a nautical scene in the background. At the left is a vignette of Liberty with a shield with plows. At the right is a sideways vignette showing a view of Belleville. The $2 note(Wait 12) has a central vignette of a woman seated with a cogwheel. At the left is a vignette of Ceres flying. At the right is a vignette of Mercury flying. The $3 note(Wait 13, Haxby NJ5 G-6) has a vignette of factories, a canal, and a bridge at the upper left. A vignette of sailing vessels appears at the left. Both Wait and Haxby list the imprint on this note as Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Co., New York. This note is imprinted Rawdon, Wright, Hatch and Edson, New York. The $5 note(Wait 14) has the NJ State Arms central vignette. At the right is a vignette of a seated native American with a gun.
