Signed by James C. Fargo as company president, and William Vanderbilt's name appears on back stock transfer. Cancelled in ink, signatures crossed-out, and POCs. VF condition. The Merchants Dispatch Transportation Company (MDT, also known as the Merchants Dispatch Refrigerator Line) was established in 1857 or 1858 by the American Express Company of New York (then a freight forwarding service). James Congdell Strong Fargo (May 5, 1829 – February 8, 1915) was a president of the American Express Company for 30 years, and the brother of American Express Company and Wells Fargo co-founder, William Fargo.
