The Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad Co., founded in 1870, primarily operated in Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, and Illinois, focusing on transporting agricultural goods like grain and livestock. Though it never reached its namesake goal of connecting Minneapolis to St. Louis, it played a key role in the region’s economy. The M&StL faced financial struggles throughout its history, including bankruptcies, and was eventually acquired by the Chicago and North Western Railway in 1960, ending its independent operations.
