Minnesota, 1861, State of Minnesota Militia commission for rank of ÒCaptainÓ to John J. Randall of ÒWinona, Winona Co. MinnesotaÓ in the ÒSecond Regiment, First Brigade, First Division, Minnesota MilitiaÓ, Dated 22 July 1861 and signed by (Gov.) Alex. Ramsey and the Adjutant General John Sanborn, Well preserved with no splitting along the folds and no toning wear. Fine condition. Ramsey is credited with being the first Union governor to commit troops during the Civil War. Ramsey is also noted for his stern statements calling for the killing or removal of specific Native Americans, chiefly the Sioux (Dakota) people that lived in the state of Minnesota. General Sanborn, on the other hand, had an illustrious Civil war record and was known for making peace with Indians, Interesting and antithical pair of notables on the same certificate.
