Mobile, Alabama, 1835. Lot of 4 I/C First and Second of Exchange notes, Black text, Company logo lettering at left, Handstamp cancelled. Fine to VF condition. Toulmin, Hazard & Co. was a commission firm involved in the cotton trade between the North and South during the early to mid-1800s and into the Civil War. Following the War of 1812, a huge increase in the production of cotton resulted in an economic boom, and by mid-century, cotton was they key cash crop of the southern economy and the most important American commodity.
