Freehold , NJ. $5, 1842, Wait Unlisted, Haxby NJ-161-16A, Probably R-5. Fine with major repairs and faults, The Monmouth Bank opened in 1824 and closed in the 1830s. It was reorganized in the early 1840s, during the depression brought on by Andrew Jackson and the panic of 1837. The reorganized bank failed in 1843. This note is printed in black, and is similar to Wait 649, which was issued by the original Monmouth Bank. This note, with a large red 'FIVE' overprint(not mentioned by Wait), was issued by the reorganized bank. The note has a central vignette showing Washington on horseback at Monmouth 28th June 1778, and a small farm implement vignette at the lower center. An oval male portrait vignette is at the left and a small oval portrait of Lafayette at the right.
