Montana & Various States, ca.1880-1910, An exceptional group of over 200 postal history covers, many mailed from numerous states to S.R. Buford & Co. of Virginia City, Montana. Included are early Montana statehood, with possibly a few territorial period, issues and post-statehood Montana items. Buford was the proprietor of a well-established mercantile business in Virginia City supplying the booming mining town with a wide range of goods. The correspondence reflects the variety of products ordered and distributed through his store, with envelopes from such notable firms as California Sugar Refinery, California Powder Works, Blackwell’s Durham Tobacco Co., Northern Pacific Railroad, and numerous other manufacturers, wholesalers, and suppliers across the United States. Most envelopes are franked with U.S. 2¢ or 3¢ issues of the late 19th and early 20th century, many with attractive cancellations and business corner cards. Collectively, this lot offers a vivid picture of Montana’s commercial lifeline in the territorial and frontier era, showcasing connections to national trade networks. Condition varies, with most examples intact and clean, a few showing expected wear from handling and postal use. Unsearched and from the Montana Historical Society. (200+_
