New Jersey (offices in New York)..., 5 Shares, I/U Stock Certificate, sailor with sextant at middle and dock with harbor at left, small steamship at bottom middle. VF condition. The Long Dock Company was incorporated in 1856 by the Erie Railroad to secure terminal property along the Jersey City waterfront and construct facilities to reach the Hudson River. Its most important project was the Bergen Hill Tunnel, completed in 1861, which provided a direct route for Erie trains to the river. Long Dock later oversaw development of extensive docks, freight yards, and ferry connections that evolved into Erie’s Pavonia Terminal complex. The company remained under Erie control, leasing its property for decades until its operations were absorbed by the railroad prior to the Erie–DL&W merger in 1960.
