New Jersey & New York, Lot of 2 I/U Franklinite Mining Companies, Includes: 1854, New Jersey Franklinite Co., 100 Shares Capital Stock Cert., S/N 176 and 1874, Bristol Franklinite Co., 50 Shares Capital Stock Cert., S/N 119. Certificates are in Choice Fine to VF+ condition. Franklinite is a black, iron-magnesium-zinc oxide mineral (a member of the spinel group) found almost exclusively at the famous zinc deposits of Franklin and Sterling Hill in New Jersey, after which it's named. Its formula is roughly (Zn,Mn,Fe)(Fe,Mn)_O_. It's notable as a major zinc ore from those localities, often occurring alongside zincite and willemite in a calcite matrix. It's weakly magnetic and typically appears as black, metallic-to-submetallic grains or octahedral crystals. (2). (From the Robert Kluge Collection).
