New Jersey, 1847-48. Lot of 2 early New Jersey mining stock certificates, Includes: 1848, Pottstown Mining and Manufacturing Co., 125 Shares I/U, S/N #21, black print with ornate left border, no vignette, VF condition, Organized in 1848 as a New Jersey charter, this company reflects the mid-19th-century push to capitalize small mining and allied manufacturing ventures around the Delaware Valley; 1847, Somerset Smelting and Mining Co., Camden, 1847, 100 Shares, I/U, with patriotic eagle vignette at top, Cert. #62, XF condition. Incorporated in Camden in 1847, the firm belongs to New Jersey’s first wave of smelting enterprises that paired local/nearby ores with Camden’s riverfront transport and growing industrial base. Issued stock from 1847 survives with patriotic eagle vignettes, attesting to early corporate fundraising during the state’s formative industrial period. While direct production data is limited, the company fits within Camden’s rapid rise as a metals-working center along the Delaware in the mid-19th century. Attractive and rare pair of early New Jersey mining certificates. (2)
