Nevada, (Inc. in Virginia), 1867. I/U £50 Sterling, 7% First Mortgage Coupon Bond, Black on green border and underprint, Portrait of Queen Victoria and Abraham Lincoln at left and right with Allegorical woman and Eagle at top, S/N 423, VF-XF condition with damage to right side margin, SBNC. Great Republic Gold & Silver Mining Co. of Virginia, 1867 — Incorporated by special act on January 25, 1867, this Virginia-chartered company was formed to finance and operate multiple gold-and-silver properties in Nevada’s Comstock district centered on Virginia City/Gold Hill during the post-Civil War investment boom; its sterling-denominated first-mortgage bonds (£50) targeted British capital and were printed by Continental Bank Note Co., New York, with rich vignette work (Liberty with the U.S. Capitol, Queen Victoria, Abraham Lincoln, and smelting scenes); contemporary descriptions note the firm “operated five gold and silver mines in Nevada,” reflecting East-coast (and London) financing of Western mining at the height of Comstock development.
