New York...,1838-62. Lot of 2 Obsolete Banknotes, Includes: 1838, New York Loan Co., $10 Issued Obsolete Promissory Note with Interest of 2 1/2%, No S/N; and, 1862, Farmers & Mechanics Bank of Rochester, 25 Cents Unissued Payment Note. Notes are in Fine to VF+ condition. This pair includes an 1838 note from the New York Loan Co., an early Manhattan financial firm active during the state’s free-banking expansion, and an 1862 issue from the Farmers & Mechanics Bank of Rochester, a long-established upstate institution operating during the Civil War era. Together these notes illustrate the evolution of New York banking from the speculative free-banking period of the late 1830s to the mature commercial networks that supported Rochester’s industrial growth in the 1860s.
