Burton, New York....., 1851. $2 Issued Obsolete Banknote, Black print with arms of New York at top center and other vignettes at left and right, S/N 6608, XF to AU condition. RWH&E. Issued in 1851 by the Bank of the Empire State in Burton, this note comes from one of the many small antebellum New York banking institutions operating during the state’s free-banking era. Banks in rural Western New York served local farming, lumber, and emerging transportation activities, issuing privately backed currency that circulated regionally before the National Banking Act. Notes from Burton-area issuers are relatively scarce and reflect the limited reach of small upstate banks in the 1850s.
