Saratoga, New York, 1862. Single folded manuscript affidavit submitted to the Town Clerk claiming exemption from military service under Chapter 477 of the Laws of 1862. The document states that J. B. Gilman was an active member of Engine Co. No. 2 of the village of Saratoga Springs, qualifying him for exemption based on fire company service. Signed and sworn, with official attestations and filing endorsement on the reverse identifying the document as an “Oath of Exemption.” A representative local Civil War–era draft exemption document. Condition Fair to Fine with original folds, light toning, and minor staining.
