Dayton, Ohio..... March 29th, 1923. National Aeronautic Association Official Timers' Sheets and related documents for several 500 and 1000 Kilometer speed tests taken in Wilbur Wright Field, in attempts to break World Records. Lot includes three Timers' Sheets, with information including Lap Numbers, starting times, elapsed times, and other relevant details, recorded and signed by Orville Wright and Odis A. Porter, as well as a Notary Public; Photo of the Timers Stand at McCook Field, where a timer was to observe the speed test; Typewritten Reports on the Speed Trials, in English and French, includes the names and locations of the officials, and details from the trials, including temperature, wind velocity, and barometer readings; Department of Commerce, Bureau of Standards Certificate for Chronometer; Photograph of the Timer's Stand at the 1 km course; Photograph of the sighting wires and Curtiss R-6 Racer; Photograph of the Pylon used in the 50 km course; and an unused postcard of the Wright Brothers Cycle Shop and Homestead in Dearborn, Michigan. Also includes a accounting of the (possible) records established in the speed tests (in French), stating that the maximum speed of a direct kilometer was set by R. L. Maughan at 380.751 KPH; the speed of 500 kilometers was set by Alex Pearson at 370.06 KPH at 1 hour and 51 minutes; and the speed of 1000 kilometers was set by H.R. Harris & R. Lockwood at 205.0669 KPH at 4 hours and 52 minutes. Very interesting and rare group related to aviation history. During this Air Derby, Orville Wright observed the record-breaking attempts, and his signature appears on all three of the Timers' Sheets. The Wright brothers - Orville (August 19, 1871 - January 30, 1948) and Wilbur (April 16, 1867 - May 30, 1912) - were two American aviation pioneers generally credited with inventing, building, and flying the world's first successful motor-operated airplane. The brothers were also the first to invent aircraft and controls that made fixed-wing powered flight possible. The Wright brothers' status as inventors of the airplane has been subject to counter-claims by various parties. Fine to XF condiion.
