Scotland, Dated 1889 (The SCWPM only lists the dates for this issue from 1893 to 1907). 1 Pound, P-244, Lithographic Test Note. Blue, yellow, and red print with Marquess of Lothian at left, back blue with, Small POC's along bottom, middle and top, Engraved "W&S" seal in red on the lower middle right with "Cancelled" as part of the seal. W&S. The image pictured in the SCWPM includes the Waterlow engraved seal but is dated 1895. PMG graded Choice About Uncirculated 58 EPQ. A similar example sold at Heritage in January 2021 for $1,140, W&S. Perhaps Waterlow & Sons were experimenting with a new printing technique, or this partially completed note was prepared to test the strength of the paper and ink. Nevertheless, it is rare.
