Aurora, Esmeralda District, Nevada Territory, 1863. 10 Shares I/U Capital Stock Certificate, Black printing with bee hive at top center under company title and Native American woman with bow and arrow at left, S/N 14, VF condition with light stains at center. Towne & Bacon, Printers. The Strawberry Mining Company was incorporated in 1862 during the early mining boom in Nevada Territory, just a year after the discovery of the rich Comstock Lode transformed the region into one of the most important mining frontiers in the United States. The company took its name from Strawberry Valley, a district known for gold and silver prospects northeast of Carson City. Like many ventures of the time, it was organized to capitalize on the rush of investment capital pouring into Nevada following the Comstock excitement. While the Strawberry Mining Company itself left little trace of long-term production, it represents the wave of speculative enterprises that defined early Nevada mining history and helped fuel the rapid economic development of the territory prior to its statehood in 1864.
