New Orleans, Louisiana, February 24th, 1848. Handwritten Stampless Letter with Mobile, Alabama, red circular cancel and circular "WAY U" cancel on the right, from George E. Payne to Charles P. Leverich regarding the sale and prices of crops, and the opening of the cotton market in New Orleans. Payne writes that he "purchased 143 bales yesterday for my friend Watkinson of Hartford." Dark brown handwriting on off-white paper. Fine condition with some toning, otherwise in excellent condition for its age. Charles P. Leverich (1811-1880) was an American banker who worked as a factor for Stephen Duncan (1787-1867), the wealthiest cotton and sugar planter in the Antebellum South. He operated under the name of 'Charles P. Leverich & Co.', with a Southern office in New Orleans, Louisiana. He joined the Board of Directors of the Bank of New York in 1840. He went on to serve as its Vice-president in 1853 and its President from 1863 to 1876. He went on to serve as its Vice-president in 1853 and its President from 1863 to 1876.
