New Orleans, Louisiana, 1859. Notary Public document, several pages, regarding the sale and purchase of a "certain mulatto slave named "Alfred" aged about twenty three years..." Black text and handwriting on blue paper. The slave, Alfred, was sold by Peter William Woodlief to Andrew O. Jackson for the sum of $1550, and the Notary Public was Alphonse Barnett, standing in for Edward Barnett, who was out of state at the time. $800 was paid upfront, and the remaining $750 was owed with interest at 8% per annum until fully paid off. The document also states that Woodlief acquired the slave from W. D. Smith, and goes on to provide documentation of Smith and his wife's renunciation of ownership of Alfred. Barnett, a native of New Orleans, was known for serving numerous Jewish and German clients. Fine to VF condition with some splitting and staining, last page has an embossed seal.
