New York, 1863. 4 Shares I/U Stock Certificate, Black printing, Dog in circular frame at top guarding a safe, with rail station and ship yard behind, S/N 795, Remnants for 10 Cent revenue stamp at top left, VF condition. Signed by H. Wells as president, and William Fargo as Secretary with Alex Holland as treasurer. The certificate is a transition certificate from 6000 Shares to 10,000 shares. Henry Wells, William G. Fargo, and John Butterfield were key founders, with Wells and Fargo being particularly notable for their later involvement in founding Wells Fargo & Co. in 1852. Both companies initially focused on transportation and financial services, such as secure shipping of goods, currency, and valuables during a time when banking and logistical services were fragmented in the United States. American Express grew rapidly and diversified, eventually becoming a leader in financial services, particularly with the introduction of money orders, traveler’s checks, and later, credit cards.
