New York, NY. 1815. Extremely early printed and partially handwritten receipt for George Suffern, accounting for goods purchased from John I. Spies, Druggist, for a total of $20.31. The store was located in No. 197 Greenwich Street, corner of Vesey Street, New York City. Signed at bottom by John I. Spies. Fine condition with some toning and staining. George Suffern is likely the son of John Suffern, first Rockland County Judge, and community leader. John Suffern, first Rockland County judge, 1798Ð1806, settled near the base of the Ramapo Mountains in 1773, and called the place New Antrim, after his home in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. New Antrim's location was considered strategically important in the Revolutionary War because it was at an important crossroads near Ramapo Pass. General George Washington and other important military leaders used John Suffern's home as headquarters when they were in the area. The town of Suffern, New York, is named after John Suffern.
