New York, New York. 186x (ca. 1862). $5000. Assistant Treasurer of the United States, Clearing House Depositary Certificate, Temporary Loan of 1862. Unissued, unsigned and uncancelled New York Clearing House Certificate. Act of Feb.25th, 1862 . Brown border and underprint with black text and vignette on face with seated allegorical Justice in middle and large black "5000" counters on UL and UR. Back is brown with room for endorsements. Vertical red overprint states that the certificate is payable in Legal Tender Notes only. Certificate # 9361. This note is listed by Hessler as X134D and has a Rarity 8 (2 to 3 known) designation. A different color version, in bright red-orange, of this note was sold by R.M.Smythe in the late 1990's and this is the first time this brown color variety has been seen. This note is a nice VF to XF example with a small hinge remnant on the back. Extremely rare if not unique example of a Federal banknote related Clearing House certificate. NBNC.
