New York, NY. ca.1830s. The Chemical Bank, $1, Proof Obsolete Banknote, allegorical seated figure at a forge at center, standing classical female figure at right. NY1505G4 pp H. PMG graded "Proof" 62 Uncirculated, with notation of printer's annotation, design cut-out, and stains. Printer: Durand, Perkins & Co., New York. Chemical Bank was chartered in 1823 as the New York Chemical Manufacturing Company; banking, originally a side business permitted under the charter, eclipsed the chemical trade within a decade, though the name endured until the bank's 1996 merger into Chase Manhattan. As a proof, this piece was never issued or signed, accounting for its exceptional state of preservation.
