New York and Connecticut. 1 large sheet 9 x 18 inches with 9 mounted banknote with a letter on top and an autographed cut square on the back. One note was cut out on the lower right. The following notes are included: 1815, Village of Canandaigua, NY. 25¢; 1816, State of New York, 25¢; 1815, City of Albany, 1¢; 1816, State of New York. Bank of New York, 87 1/2¢, missing lower left and right corners; 1816, Catskill, NY. The Catskill Bank, 2¢; 1815, Village of Ballston-Spa, NY, 3¢; 1816, State of New York, Western Turnpike Gates, 6 1/4¢; ND (1815-16) Norwich, CT. Phoenix Manufacturing Co., 50¢; and, ND (1815-16) Albany, NY. Hamilton Glass Factory, 5¢. Condition varies between Good to VG with issues to VF condition or better. All are glued to the scrapbook paper. The top letter written in small handwriting begins "1816, These small bills called shin plasters.....", interesting and appears to be a warning. The bottom has additional text neatly written "These bills were sealed up with the intention of transmitting the knowledge of the monstrous (?) on the public to posterity.....". This was written in 1836 or 1837 when there was a major depression and the writer was warning the readers about possibly inflation. Deserves additional research. The back of the sheet has an autograph of Judge Archibald McNeill with a note that he died in Bayer County Texas with a newspaper obituary stating he died at 60 years of age of typhoid fever. Interesting and historic record of New York and Northeastern scrip notes post the War of 1812.
