New York, May 29, 1861. A personal handwritten letter dated May 29, 1861, about two months into the Civil War form a soldier who will be stationed in the 9th Regiment in Washington City. Written on Ninth Regiment NY State Militia official company orders sheet dated May 23, 1861. Company orders contains orders by Captain Allan Rutherford instructing troops to assemble at the Armory in full gear for inspection by the Union Defence Committee. He bids farewell to friends and declares that he is serving because he loves freedom and that he might fight and die in battle nobly. Fine with stains.
