Washington D.C., 1875. Lot of 2 I/U Deposit Certificates for the Treasury of the United States, Black text with black border, printed on light blue paper, National banks, such as the Northfield National Bank of Vermont, were required to deposit to the Treasury 5% of its circulation. one is issued for $3,882 and the second for 47 Cents, Both are in VF to XF condition. Each piece is signed by Edward O. Graves (3 August, 1843 - 1909), a United States banker who was Chief of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing from 1885 to 1889. After college, Graves joined the Office of Treasurer of the United States under Francis E. Spinner as a clerk. In 1868, he became chief clerk in the Treasurer's office. He later became chief examiner. On July 1, 1874, he became superintendent of the redemption agency for the redemption of national bank notes. In 1883, President of the United States, Chester A. Arthur, named Graves the Assistant Treasurer of the United States. (2). Sold "AS IS" no returns accepted.
