Ontario, CA. 1968. $5000 7 1/2% Mortgage (Revenue) Bond. Eagle vignette. Orange border. Overprint reads "duplicate $5000 bond issued in place of original". Ontario Motor Speedway (nicknamed "The Big O") in Ontario, California, was a 2.5 mile track built similar to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana. The Ontario Motor Speedway Corporation financed Ontario Motor Speedway through the issuance of $25.5 million dollars in bonds. The bonds were held at 7 1/2% revenue to be due on February 1, 1998. The 15-man board of directors was an interesting variety of business and sports men as well as celebrities. They included racing legends Parnelli Jones and Roger Penske as well as celebrities Paul Newman, Kirk Douglas and Dick Smothers. The president of the board was a 33-year-old attorney from Indianapolis, Dick B. Lockton. The track was located between G and 4th streets just east of Haven in Ontario. The groundbreaking ceremony for the speedway was held on September 24, 1968. Actor Kirk Douglas was one of many who spoke at the event. The premise behind the Ontario Motor Speedway was to mirror the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is located in Indianapolis, Indiana. 1980 was the last year of operation and the City of Ontario sold the track for $10 million to Chevron Land Management. Famous California NASCAR race track. Rare bond. 2 found in archive. Jeffries BNC. XF.
