Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1916. 50 Shares Capital Stock I/U Certificate, Black print on green border and building as underprint in green, S/N 51, Certificate is in VF condition with folds an minor faults. SBNC. The Philadelphia Stock Exchange Building Company was incorporated in 1916 to construct and manage a permanent headquarters for the Philadelphia Stock Exchange (PHLX) — one of the oldest stock exchanges in the United States, founded in 1790. The company’s purpose was strictly real-estate focused: it financed, owned, and maintained the building that would house the Exchange and related tenants. By the early 20th century, the Philadelphia Stock Exchange had outgrown its prior facilities and sought a modern structure befitting its growing importance in American finance. The Philadelphia Stock Exchange Building Co. was organized to raise capital through the issuance of stock (like the 1916 certificate in question) and to oversee construction.
