Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1907. Lot of 5, I/C Panic Currency Scrip Notes from the American Steel & Wire Company, Payable only through the Pittsburgh Clearing House through the First National Bank, Pittsburgh, PA., Includes $1 in light blue; $2 in yellow; $5 in blue; $10 in light green; and $20 in brown. All have a red "8" overprint at top left, Paid POCs at bottom right, and have handstamps on back. XF-Unc condition. Republic Bank Note Co. American Steel & Wire Company was formed partially through a merger of the American Steel Company and the National Wire Company. American Steel & Wire Company was eventually absorbed into U.S. Steel Corporation. These Scrip Notes were issued due to the Panic of 1907, a financial crisis caused by a significant drop in the New York Stock Exchange and a subsequent run on banks. (5)
