Newark, New Jersey, June 8th, 1853. Issued and Paid Draft for $6.04, S/N 2007, Signed by James Campbell as Postmaster General, Issued to Charles T. Gray as Postmaster of Newark, Black text with thin black border, George Washington at top center, Allegorical woman with American shield and cornucopia at top right, "Transfer" written vertically in ink at left flanked by a steamboat and locomotive, Red "Paid" handstamp at bottom center. Fine-VF condition, especially for age, and printed by Hufty & Danforth. James Campbell (September 1, 1812 - January 27, 1893) was a politician from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served as Attorney-General of Pennsylvania and United States Postmaster General during the presidency of Franklin Pierce. Campbell's Cabinet service was a reward to the faction of the Democratic Party that supported James Buchanan in the 1852 presidential nomination convention. Furthermore, as a Catholic, Campbell's nomination helped Pierce reach out to new voters from Ireland. Charles T. Gray (1807-1875) was appointed Postmaster of Newark, New Jersey in April, 1853. He went on to serve as the City Treasurer of Newark from 1862-1868.
