New York, 1900. People of the State of New York document signed by Theodore Roosevelt as Governor of New York. Black text, New York State seal at top left, Embossed gold seal at bottom left. This document appoints Louis Edgar Potter as First Lieutenant in the 32nd Separate Company (Second Regiment) Infantry, National Guard of New York, from the date of February 1st, 1900. The document was witnessed by Governor Roosevelt, and his distinctive signature appears at bottom right. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (October 27, 1858 - January 6, 1919) often referred to as Teddy or by his initials, T. R., was an American politician, statesman, conservationist, naturalist, historian, and writer who served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He previously served as the 25th vice president under President William McKinley from March to September 1901 and as the 33rd governor of New York from 1899 to 1900. Having assumed the presidency after McKinley's assassination, Roosevelt emerged as a leader of the Republican Party and became a driving force for anti-trust and Progressive policies.
