Rhode Island, 1838. 20 Shares Capital Stock I/C Certificate, Black print with seated woman beside shield at top center, S/N 621, VF to VF+ condition, RWH. Chartered in 1832, the New York, Providence & Boston Railroad Co. was created to connect Providence, Rhode Island to Stonington, Connecticut, serving as a vital link in the route between New York City and Boston. By the late 1830s, passengers would travel by rail to Stonington and transfer to steamships bound for New York, creating one of the earliest and most efficient intermodal routes in the Northeast. Nicknamed the "Stonington Line," it played a key role in early American transportation, setting the stage for expanded rail and steamboat integration in the region.
