Cuba & New York, 1897. Delmonico's Dinner Menu for a New York Journal Reception for Miss Cossio Y Cisneros "on the occasion of her restoration to freedom." Dark blue text on thick cardstock, American flag and Cuban flag at top center, Menu is in French and includes dishes such as Salade de homard; Mayonnaise de volaille; Galantine de Poulet; and Glaces fantaisies. Evangelina Cosio y Cisneros (September 23, 1877 - April 29, 1970) was the focus of events that played out in the years 1896-1898 during the Cuban War of Independence. Her imprisonment as a rebel and escape from a Spanish jail in Cuba, with the assistance of the reporter, Karl Decker from William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal, created wide interest in the United States press, as well as accusations of fraud and bribery. In addition to this reception at Delmonico's, Cisneros also was the focus of a reception at Madison Square Garden, and later met with President McKinley in Washington, D.C. Ms. Cosio’s story faded with the rush of events, in particular the sinking of the American warship U.S.S. Maine and American’s declaration of war on Spain, which ultimately resulted in Cuba’s independence. Fine-VF condition with toning and foxing. Printed by Dempsey & Carroll, N.Y. Very interesting piece.
