Pay Table Office, Connecticut, February 26th, 1783. A letter-receipt referring to "return of provisions and clothing collected in the town of Prinston on the Tax of 2/6 on the Pound is lodged in the office amounting to 1160 pounds 12 shillings and 3 Pence half penny Lawful Money at the prices stated in Said Tax - for delivery of which Articles the Select Men of Said Town are accountable to the state", certified by Olive Wolcott Jr., Fenn Wadsworth, Huntington, and John Lawrence. VF to XF condition. Signed by Pay-Table members Jedediah Huntington, Fenn Wadsworth, and John Lawrence. Promissory Notes like this were issued by the State of Connecticut to help finance the Revolutionary War. The Pay-Table (also known as the Committee of Four) managed Connecticut's military finances during the ongoing conflict. John Lawrence (1719-1802) served as treasurer of the Connecticut colony, and later as the Connecticut State Treasurer from 1769 to 1789, spanning the crucial period of colonial rule, through the American revolution, and into the early years of the United States. During the Revolutionary War, Lawrence was commissioner of loans for the new nation. VF condition. Fascinating piece of history from the Revolutionary War.
