Grangemouth, Scotland, November 1831, 1 Guinea, P-299 Contemporary Counterfeit, Black with no underprint, reclining woman in middle with cornucopia and lion, in VG to Almost fine condition with edge faults on the bottom middle and left bottom margins, otherwise still attractive. Also included is a stampless letter from the Collector of Customs at Grangemouth to the Cashier of the Royal Bank of Scotland asking for the money for the forgery accepted in payment as custom's duties, the bank did not cooperate. The cover has a GRANGE MOUTH oveprint in 2 lines on the back, a Paid cancel as well as additional address and other notations. Rare and historic numismatic pair that gives provenance to the banknote and adds interest to the letter.
