Charleston, South Carolina, 1891. $100 I/C 8% Coupon Bond, Brown print with brown border and green underprint, Small vignette of Fort Sumter under title at top center with large black 'X' on face and over coupons, S/N 5, Good to Fine condition with splitting, tears, and stains. Berkeley Canning and Manufacturing Co. represents the late-19th-century Southern shift toward agricultural processing and local manufacturing, reflecting efforts to industrialize farm production in post-Reconstruction South Carolina. The bond was issued 30 years after Fort Sumter was bombarded and signaled the beginning of the Civil War. Interesting use of Fort as it's main vignette for the bond, possibly a subtle signal of resistance to their loss in the war between the states.
