Issued in 1857 by the Merchants’ Bank of South Carolina at Cheraw, these notes represent the circulating currency of an important Pee Dee River trading center whose banks supported the region’s cotton and commercial activity in the years just before the Civil War. Pre-war issues from Cheraw are moderately scarce, and groups from this institution offer an appealing look at South Carolina’s mid-19th-century banking history. (3). Sold "AS IS" no returns accepted.
