FL. 1971. All 3 with vignette of winged Mercury and planet. 1) > 100 shares with blue border. 2) < 100 shares with brown border. 3) 100 shares with green border. Saturn Airways was one of the founding member of the National Air Carrier Association, Inc. (NACA), an air carrier trade assocation. One of the reasons for forming the association was to maintain a strong relationship with the Department of Defense. Because the "Federal Aviation Act of 1958" required Supplemental Carriers to be certificated, the Department of Defense (DOD) made a decision to only contract is passenger and cargo air transportation services to certificated air carriers. In 1972, NACA was one of the initial members appointed to the National Defense Transportation Association Military Airlift Committee. This Committee was established as an official government advisory committee to assist to Commander-in-Chief, Military Airlift Command and later the Commander-in-Chief United States Transportation Command, in better understanding the commercial aviation community and how the civilian air carriers could better assist the air transportation needs of the Department of Defense. In December 1967 and January 1968, respectively, Saturn took delivery of two Douglas DC-8 Super 61CF jets. This allowed it to operate transcontinental cargo and charter flights, some of which included military flights to Vietnam. Federated BNC. XF.
